Your Brand New Room Fragrance According To Your Next Netflix Binge
Pour the vino, grab the pizza, fluff up the pillows and pick any one of these show and candle combos for a binge-watch weekend your weary body deserves.| April 5, 2018
You know you’re getting older when all you want to do on a weekend night is drink wine, eat pizza and binge watch a television series, all within the confines of your welcoming bed. A party, you say? I have to put on proper pants, you say? Thanks, but no thanks. Now that the world has been blessed with Netflix, binge-watch weekends are made so much easier. You don’t even have to lift a finger to click to the next episode. Ah, the sloth life.
When it comes to self pamper sessions, we think you have to right to go all out. Whether it’s slathering on a super expensive mask, putting on silk pyjamas that feel like clouds on your skin or lighting up a candle to really put you in a mood. Mood lighting, cushy pillows, snacks and what could potentially be your next favourite series? La dolce vita.
A whole bunch of new shows and new seasons have just landed and if you don’t know where to turn in the labyrinth that is Netflix, allow Team KULALA’s resident binge-watcher to step in i.e. me. I picked six shows that cover a variety of genres and moods, matching each of them to a super luxe candle that will definitely do plenty for your senses.
A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
WHAT: Lemony Snicket’s trio of unfortunate Baudelaire siblings are reimagined in this new series that sees the universally-loved Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, the conniving yet hilarious villain who tries to rob the children of their very large inheritance – whatever means possible. Given the title of the show, you know that the protagonists are in for one unfortunate event after another – the narrator constantly reminds the audience that this is a story with no happy ending – but you still get so damn frustrated when it happens. To counter the frustration, fill the air with the scent of calming lavender, wrapped up in a jar that fits with the “unfortunate” theme to a T.

THE GOOD PLACE
WHAT: Eleanor Shellstrop (played by Kristen Bell) dies and winds up in “The Good Place”, where you meet your soulmate and live forever in your dream home. Sounds perfect, until Eleanor realises that “The Good Place” got the wrong person and that she was meant for “The Bad Place”. The Good Place has an important theme at its core – what determines if we’re good or bad? – but it is still a comedy, though one with heart. And also, quite a bit of nonsense. A show like that, you need a scent that will make you feel happy, like this orange blossom scented candle from Aerin.

SHADOWHUNTERS: THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS
WHAT: If Riverdale isn’t quite your cup of tea, but you still crave some young adult fiction, try Shadowhunters based on the best-selling The Mortal Instruments series of books. Set in an alternate New York where vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and seelies are kept in check by the part-human, part-angle shadowhunters, the shadow world finds itself thrown off balance when an antagonist schemes to destroy all magical beings that lack angel blood. Word of warning: Shadowhunters can get quite cheesy at times, but things get much, much better in the second season, so hold on. Also, everyone in this show is good looking, it’s ridiculous. With so much sword-wielding action, we prescribe citrus, like lemongrass, to keep you feeling energetic.
NO. OF SEASONS: 3
SCENT: Jo Loves Lemongrass Scented Candle
WHAT: Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter) is an alcoholic private investigator with a troubled past and a pretty impressive skill set. You see, apart from being a sleuth, Jessica has superhuman strength and can jump off buildings without a second thought. But she’s also extremely over it – it being everything and everyone – and permanently pissed off. Jessica Jones has a neo-noir tone to it, backed by sultry music and voiceovers. For that, we match it with a sultry scent in the form of warm amber, black pepper, bourbon and vanilla.
NO. OF SEASONS: 2
SCENT: Byredo Ambre Japonais Scented Candle
WHAT: Oh, science fiction fans, you’re going to love this one. Set in a distant future where human consciousness are stored in chips called “stacks” – and hence can be ejected and inserted into different “sleeves” – Takashi Kovacs, a highly-skilled mercenary, is pulled out from “death” and thrown into a sleeve that looks like Joel Kinnaman to investigate the murder of the disgustingly wealthy Laurens Bancroft – by none other than a re-sleeved Laurens Bancroft himself. There are twists, turns and a lot of flashbacks. To keep you alert so you don’t miss the details, try this quirky coffee scented candle, complete with goggly eyes.
NO. OF SEASONS: 1
SCENT: Anya Smells! Coffee Scented Candle
THE END OF THE F***KING WORLD
WHAT: He’s a psychopath planning his first kill. She’s a rebel who wants to run away. Boy wants to kill girl, just because, and so they embark on a road trip. What could go wrong? Well, plenty, especially when he starts developing feelings for her – and that the cops are hot on their trail. The atmosphere in this dark comedy looks permanently overcast and foreboding, and when we think of that, we think of rain and damp grass, so why not a candle that smells like that?
