From Beauty To Books, These Are The 30 Things That Made Our Year

Consider this the bestest of the "best of" lists we've made all year! These topped 2017, but we're taking them straight into 2018.

What a year, right? Let’s see – we visited all four fashion week cities in September and October, we attended our first couture and cruise season, we visited the Maldives (for work if you can believe it!), we rolled out our biggest and greatest giveaway ever (it’s still happening, by the way!), our team got bigger and it is about to get bigger, because Yoyo’s going to be a mom!

As we make our resolutions, we’re also looking back at the things that made the top of our charts. We’re always going on about the best this and the best that, so we decided: why not come up with a master list of the 30 things we couldn’t get enough of in 2017? Hence, viola. We’ll be taking most of these into 2018, that’s for sure. Here’s wishing a big, happy new year from Team KULALA to all of you!

Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum

Ultra-moisturising in both summer and winter weather, yet almost weightless under makeup.

By Terry Baume De Rose Lip Care

More like a lip treatment than a lip balm, this will cure even the most chappiest and grittiest of lips overnight.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir

The pepperminty smell takes getting used to, but when that is over, you have one of the most luxurious skin mists that does more than hydrate. We like it as the last step of our skincare to seal all the good things in.

Chanel Beauty Le Lift Flash Eye Revitalizer

It is called “Flash Eye” for a reason. It de-puffs and brightens the under-eye region almost instantly and is possibly one of the lightest and most comfortable eye treatments we’ve ever used. Read the review here.

Dior Beauty Brush Nº16

Officially one of the softest, most well angled contouring brushes we’ve ever come across. The brush is the perfect size!

Innisfree My Real Squeeze Mask with Manuka Honey

We were introduced to this by our pal Irene Kim and we have not looked back since. It is so cheap, so effective and its thinness and sculpted shape means it fits the face like a glove!

NARS Aqua Glow Cushion Foundation

Not only does it blur out imperfections with just a little product, it leaves a glowing finish and stays on all day without clogging the pores. See the other cushion foundations on the top of our list here and here.

Sisley Double Tenseur Instant & Long Term Primer

We like it so much we wrote an entire essay on it. If you want more of our favourite primers, check them out here and here.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

A little goes a long way  and it doesn’t melt off as you go through the day.

Tarte Tartelette In Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette

This one is unanimous – we all love it. The powders are fine, the colours are so easy to work with for both day and night, the palette is compact and yet comes with a big mirror. The only thing that could beat this? The new Tartelette Toasted Eyeshadow Palette.

Balenciaga Knife Boots

It was the year of the sock boot and there was no sock boot quite like Balenciaga’s ultra sexy, ultra pointed Knife boots. We saw them all over the spring and fall fashion months across all four cities (and uh, may have bagged a couple of pairs ourselves).

Balenciaga Logo T-Shirt

Tis’ was also the season of the logos and again, no one wiped out the competition quite like Balenciaga. While the prices are admittedly hefty, Balenciaga’s t-shirts feel silky and soft on the skin. (It is Yoyo’s grab-and-go t-shirt!)

Chanel Gabrielle Backpack

If you are long overdue for a Chanel splurge, consider the Gabrielle. Scratch that – consider the Gabrielle backpack. It is a classic in the making, the perfect size and the hard-base means that you can put all sorts of stuff in it without misshaping the bag.

Chanel Mademoiselle J12 Watch

We already loved the masculine meets feminine aspect of the watch, then Chanel adds a cartoon Coco Chanel on the face? Sold. See our three-part campaign featuring the timepiece here, here and here.

JW Anderson Pierce Tote Bag

You know us – we pick a micro-bag in any form over any other bag on any given day. So, when a tote bag catches our eye, you know we mean business.

Louis Vuitton Mini Hat Box Bag

Now, circling back to micros. Louis Vuitton’s Mini Hat Box Bag from the Cruise 2018 collection is our favourite of the year. Will you just look at it? Plus, when you’re not using it, it doubles as an interior piece.

Max Mara Camel Cashmere Coat

A classic coat that is so comfortable and versatile, yet fits right into a regular sized carry-on tote bag because of its cashmere-y softness. The perfect travel coat!

Paul Andrew Suede Mules

While the mule came into prominence in 2016, thanks to Gucci’s slip-on Horsebit loafers, 2017 established that the heeled mule with a pointed toe was the creme de la creme of all the It girl shoes. This one from Paul Andrew has all the makings of a classic mule that literally goes with everything.

Saint Laurent Over-The-Knee Boots

So great that Yoyo wore them throughout the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris. It is perfect under skirts and over jeans AND it can be scrunched up for a completely different look.

Tibi Double Breasted Satin Twill Suit

The last year saw us wearing suits in a variety of cuts, colours and textures. Sometimes with a shirt, sometimes with nothing at all. If you haven’t hopped on the suit wagon, 2018 is the time to start.

Cherry Bombe The Cookbook

Our resident clean eating master Bella Koh picks this cheeky book of recipes written by over a hundred women – for women!

BVLGARI Eau de The Bleu Candle

This candle is so fresh, rejuvenating and luxurious. It reminds us of the ocean, but with the saltiness, of course.

Aesop Rind Concentrate Body Balm

Good body moisturisers are not hard to find, but a majority of them work better when you’re in your ‘jammies than when you’re going about your day-to-day. Aesop’s citrus-centric body balm s light and seeps into the skin quickly, keeping skin moisturised but not greasy. It’s our beauty and lifestyle contributor Shloka Narang‘s favourite!

Calvin Klein Modern Cotton Bra

The bra that has been Instagrammed to death – and for good reason. It is like the white t-shirt of bras.

“Sad Girls” By Lang Leav

Our Love & Relationships columnist Min picks this as her “Best of 2017”: a novel about anxiety, choices, tragedy and first loves, written by the same award-winning mind behind “Love & Misadventures”.

Jo Malone Lime & Basil Scented Candle

To scent up her home, Min’s go-to fragrance for the year was Jo Malone’s Lime Basil & Mandarin, although we have to say, any Jo Malone candle gets our vote.

Menu World Concrete Lamp

Bella also picks this highly covetable, minimal lamp from Menu World and we can absolutely see why.

“Crazy Rich Asians: A Novel” By Kevin Kwan

Is this the best book we’ve ever read? No, but we finally have an soon-to-be-a-movie international best seller that places an Asian author, Asian protagonists and Singapore at the forefront. Yay, Asians!

Kiehl’s Corps Creme de Corp Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter With Shea and Jojoba Butter

We love the Creme de Corps, but for days where we crave a little extra, a little sweetness, we go for the soy milk and honey version.

Diptyque Baies Candle

Who doesn’t love Diptyque? Baies (or “berries” in French) combines roses and blackcurrant to give a sweet and refreshing scent without being overly saccharine.
