People & Places: Calvin Wang, New York

Proof that the same city can offer so much, we got our bud Calvin Wang (@clowverk) to tell us his picks from the Big Apple, including one that Trump allegedly disapproves of. Intrigued?

You can travel to a city all you want, but when it comes to finding the best that it has to offer, nothing beats getting it straight from the horse’s mouth. That is, asking a local to spill all the deets. Whether you’re schmoozing on the streets of Paris or eating your way through Hong Kong, we want you to make the most out of your trip by skipping the mediocre and going to the best restaurants, watering holes and chill spots. Not a tick of time to waste is our philosophy when it comes to travelling. Enter People & Places, a travel series where we ask our pals from around the world to list five of their favourite local haunts that they think you should check out when you’re on their home turf.

We love us some New York. It is the kind of city that, with the risk of sounding like an infomercial, truly has something for everyone. It is the kind of city that everyone has different opinions about when asked about their favourites. Ask us and it changes every season! Because we’ve got big love for the Big Apple, we asked yet another New Yorker for his favourite haunts in the city – our pal, Calvin Wang (@clowverk)! Here, Calvin shares the places are near and dear to his heart, from pizza places filled with memories to spots when he needs to zen out. It’s up to you, Calvin, Caaaaalvin! (Please, someone get the reference so we don’t look like fools.)

5 Crosby Street
New York, NY 10013

“One of my favorite furniture design stores. Whenever I feel like fashion bores me – which we all have to admit, does happen – I like to come here to feel pampered by designs that are beautifully crafted with refined material.”

The Noguchi Museum

9-01, 33rd Street Queens
New York, NY 11106

“This is probably the last museum where I find zen (well, duh) and calmness at in the big apple. Even during the weekend days it’s not as crowded as the other popular museums in town.”

EN Japanese Brasserie

435 Hudson Street
New York, NY 10014

“Practically my cafeteria, I like to come here with friends, family, sometimes alone, even, or I like to order delivery –via Caviar – to eat at home in front of my place when I feel anti-social. Noteworthy dishes include the garlic fried rice with shiso leaf, shabu shabu salad, uni and ikura rice and the market price wagyu beef.”

Joe’s Pizza

7 Carmine Street
New York, NY 10014

“Don’t we all have some memory food destinations? Joe’s Pizza definitely tops my list as so many memories – or lost memories to be frank and many of those I’d have preferred not to remember them – are related to this little hole in the wall off the corner of Bleecker and Carmine. Try the simple pepperoni pizza or the plain cheese pizza after a night out with friends. Add just a bit too much garlic power and chili flakes and give your palette a wake-up kick!”

Waverly Inn

16 Bank Street
New York, NY 10014

“I’ve been to many hot spots, trendy, or limited seating restaurants, but this dark cavern space with a hidden glasshouse terrace offers a romantic yet casually delightful American bistro. Chicken pot pie and crab cake cooked to perfection, but please don’t skip the buttermilk biscuit and the thin maple butter accompanied with it. Yes, it’s pure empty calories, but trust me it may just be a much better choice compared to a bottle of alcohol. One last thing: rumour has it – and it’s printed on the restaurant menu – that Donald Trump claimed that it serves the “worst food in the city”, so it must be pretty good.”
