Brand to Know: Ruslan Baginskiy

The go-to milliner of Instagram royalty and Tinseltown A-listers. Oh, and Madonna.

9 out of 10 times Yoyo is spotted wearing a hat, she gets asked where it’s from. And 9 out of 10 times, the answer is: Ukrainian designer Ruslan Baginskiy. Baginskiy’s toppers have followed her everywhere from the streets of Paris to the rooftops of Morocco. Like Yoyo, Baginskiy’s eponymous label is where her fellow It girls of Instagram go-to in search of hats to top off their looks.

Baginskiy’s foray into fashion began as a stylist in his hometown Lviv, eventually leading him to pursue his passion for hats in 2012. The designer’s fascination with hats began at an early age. “My family shared my passion, and when I was a little kid I always admired hats my grandparents were wearing. I remember a moment when my grandma and I were passing by the hat atelier, that was the first moment when I thought about that as my possible future,” shared Baginskiy in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.

The business of hat-making is known to be one that is so deeply rooted in tradition that ever so often fall behind the time. What sets Baginskiy apart is his ability to approach designing hats, as one would navigate ready-to-wear. With every new release, Baginskiy not only expands his existing lineup of toppers but also breathes a new lease of life into his signature silhouettes. For instance, the brand’s now signature hard-brimmed baker boy hat which shot to fame when Bella Hadid was spotted in it at a New York Fashion Week dinner party, has been rendered in an extensive array of fabrications and colourways throughout the years.

Since the Hadid sighting three years ago, Baginskiy’s creations have made its rounds on the feeds of Instagram royalty and Hollywood A-listers. Everyone from Kourtney Kardashian to Madonna counts themselves as a fan of Baginskiy’s toppers. Last year, the brand marked another milestone when it made its fashion week debut at Paris Couture Week.

Baginskiy’s successes come as little surprise – its designs speak for itself. While most hats conceal your uncooperative mane, Baginskiy’s hats actually make bad hair days look good. Even when you aren’t having one of those days when your tresses just seem to have missed the memo, the designer’s hats do just as well in elevating an outfit.

Those days when your outfit’s begging for that little sumthin’ sumthin’ extra, a Baginskiy baker boy hat, or perhaps, bonnet would swoop in to the rescue. Also, given that summer is in full swing, there’s no better UV protection than that of a hat. Yoyo’s choice for the season was a statement wide-brimmed number. What’s yours?
