All the Pieces from Gucci’s First-Ever Sustainable Collection

Gucci's Off The Grid collection marks the latest development in the Italian house's commitment to a sustainable future.
|

Since taking over the helm at Gucci in 2015, Alessandro Michele has remained steadfast in his commitment to sustainability. It began with the use of 100% recycled nylon in 2016. The year after, the Italian house announced that it was going fur-free. Last year, it furthered its sustainability efforts by going carbon neutral. The latest development in its efforts sees the launch of it’s first-ever sustainable collection aptly coined Gucci Off The Grid.

Michele might have been the man behind many of fashion’s trends in the last five years but his endeavours towards a greener future have been anything but fleeting. Gucci Off The Grid is a unisex collection of ready-to-wear pieces, accessories, shoes and carryalls made from recycled, organic, bio-based and sustainably sourced materials. Created with the environment in mind, the collection naturally skews towards outdoor wear. Utilitarian windbreakers, pants with gaiter and backpacks featuring the house’s revered monogram print make a case for fashionable garb even in the great outdoors.

The campaign, directed by Michele himself, features familiar faces from the realms of entertainment and environmental activism photographed within a treehouse set against skyscrapers. Amongst them – Jane Fonda (who although in her 80s has been an active participant at climate change protests), Lil Nas X, British environmentalist David de Rothschild, American crooner King Princess and Japanese artist Miyavi.

As Michele continues to reclaim the fashion industry’s bad rep on the environmental end, the hope remains that fellow industry players would follow suit. Not that we needed any more reasons to love Gucci – we already do – but its commitment to the environmental cause makes our heart swell. Take our money, take all of it.
