Swimwear Shopping? These Sustainable Brands Are Where to Look

Made from eco-friendly fabrics and sustainably produced to last a long, long time, you don't have to worry about these bikinis and two-pieces ending back in the landfills.

Ah, the first taste of freedom. If you live in Singapore, the quarantine regulations will begin to ease off tomorrow. This means, the beaches that have been now closed for over a month will finally reopen its shores. Technically speaking, living in the tropics, we have the entire year to hit up the beach whenever but with holiday plans still shelved away, taking a trip to the beach bears the faintest semblance of a summer getaway. After two months of being cooped indoors, it’s a tantalising offer.

As you dream of that first moment of sinking your feet into the powdery sand and dip your toes into the clear, blue sea, you’ll need the perfect swimsuit to complete the picturesque moment – and the future beach days after to make the most of what remains of summer. While you’re planning your summer days at the beach (and duh, the outfits to go with it), why not take your appreciation for mother nature a step further by paying attention to where you’re getting your bikini and one piece hauls from?

Swimwear options are aplenty and by now, you must have had them pop up on your Instagram ads, your inbox and on the homepages of your regular shopping sites. We’d instead like to turn your attention to a lineup of sustainable swimwear brands created from eco-friendly fabrics that do little to no harm to the environment. We’re all for guilt-free indulgence in the sun, sand and the sea.

If you were unfamiliar with Australian swimwear label Peony, you would hardly have been able to guess the origins of its catalogue of polka dotted, checks, stripes, a melange of floral patterns rendered in candy pastel hues and the cutest cuts. All of Peony’s printed swimwears are made from Econyl – an eco-friendly alternative to nylon produced from abandoned fishing nets and nylon waste from landfills and oceans around the world. Look closely and you’d also notice distinct, textured fabric on some of Peony’s pieces which is unique to the brand and entirely made in-house.

Medina Swimwear

Made entirely from recycled fabric and leaving no material unused, Medina Swimwear is built around an unwavering commitment to sustainability. This stretches beyond the label’s production practices. Putting its money where its mouth is, the label also donates part of its profits back to environmental organisations working towards restoring dear mother earth. Say no more, Medina Swimwear’s punchy-hued, cut out swimsuits have our vote.

It’s not often that you hear of swimwear being handmade. At Fisch, each piece is handcrafted in Italy from fabric woven in its northern region, Lombardy. Sustainable in its make and of the highest quality that is meant to stay in your summer wardrobe for years, Fisch’s swimsuits are timeless in every sense of the word.

Bondi Born

The other great thing about sustainable clothing besides the obvious is that most of these pieces are built to last. At Bondi Born, if rinsed after use, its trademarked Sculpteur fabric can last 10 times longer than the average swimwear. Which essentially means pieces from Bondi Born will live and age well in your wardrobe for years. This Australian swimwear label won’t go breaking your heart or that of the environment. A win for all!

Sustainability is front of the mind at Matteau, an Australian swimwear label conceived by two sisters. Committed to reducing their carbon footprints on the manufacturing end, the duo have kept the bulk of their production within Australia only outsourcing niche techniques. Matteau’s designs are as easy, breezy as the summer days ahead.
